Who can be a councillor?
You can stand for election if:
- You are a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen
- You are 18 or older on the day of nomination
- You live, work or own property in Devon
Why be a councillor?

Being a councillor in Devon
We understand that there’s a lot to consider if you’re thinking about becoming a councillor. Take a look at some of the questions we get asked the most and learn more about Devon County Council.
Do I need to join a political party?
No, you don’t need to join a political party to become a councillor. You can stand as an Independent or represent a party.
Will I get paid?
Councillors receive a basic annual allowance of about £15,000, with additional allowances for extra responsibilities.
What training and support will I get?
You’ll receive extensive support, including training and IT support. Plus benefits like allowances and access to an Employee Assistance Programme.
What is the time commitment?
Being a councillor can take up to 20 hours per week, depending on commitments, with more for leadership roles.

I wholeheartedly believe in a fair and open society with transparency of governance and being a councillor is the best way to promote these principles for the benefit of my local community.
I feel passionate about my community and that led me to stand for the County Council. No use complaining from the side lines, you need get in there and try and make a difference.
