Flag removal costs

May I request the cost incurred by council and therefore tax payers for the council to remove the flags displayed on the street light (lamp) posts along Bridge Street and down the A379 towards The Devon Hotel near Marsh Barton. This took place during the evening of 14th December 2025 with lanes been closed and mechanical “cherry picker” type equipment which involved the time of a number of council employees. In short, the total cost of this to the tax payers of Exeter.

Thank you for your request regarding the cost incurred by Devon County Council for the removal of flags displayed on street lighting columns along Bridge Road and down the A379 towards The Devon Hotel near Marsh Barton on the evening of 14 December 2025.

Devon County Council does not hold the final invoiced cost at this time, as the work has not yet been fully billed. However, the estimated cost of the operation is approximately £6,000. This estimate includes lane closures, use of mechanical lifting equipment, and the time of several council employees.

Under the provisions of the Highways Act 1980, the Council will recharge the full cost to the individual(s) responsible for erecting the flags without authorisation and will take enforcement action to recover these costs. This ensures that the cost to the public is zero.
