Safeguarding special: New safeguarding self-assessment tool launched for early years and childcare providers

Devon Early Years and Childcare Service has launched an updated Safeguarding Self-Assessment Tool to support early years providers in reviewing and strengthening their safeguarding practices.

Aligned with the 2025 EYFS statutory framework updates, Ofsted registration requirements, and Devon Safeguarding Children Partnership guidance, the tool helps providers:

  • Confirm safeguarding culture and compliance
  • Identify areas for improvement
  • Prepare for Ofsted inspections
  • Meet Section 11 of the Children Act (2004)

Separate versions are available for group-based providers and childminders.

School-managed provision is exempt, as they complete the Devon Education Services Safeguarding Audit annually.

Providers are encouraged to complete the tool with their teams and contact their Early Years and Childcare Adviser (EYCA) for support or training.
