New safeguarding self-assessment tool launched for early years providers (to replace the safeguarding self audit)

Devon Early Years and Childcare Service is excited to announce the release of an updated safeguarding safeguarding self assessment tool designed to help early years providers strengthen safeguarding practices and meet the standards expected by Ofsted.

This essential tool is fully aligned with:

  • 2025 EYFS statutory framework updates
  • Ofsted registration requirements
  • Devon Safeguarding Children Partnership guidance

Why is this important?

Safeguarding is at the heart of quality provision. This tool supports providers to:

  • Confirm a strong safeguarding culture and compliance
  • Identify areas for improvement
  • Prepare confidently for Ofsted inspections
  • Meet Section 11 of the Children Act (2004)

Separate versions are available for group-based providers and childminders.
(School-managed provision is exempt as they complete the Devon Education Services Safeguarding Audit annually)

Next steps:

Providers are encouraged to complete the tool with their teams and reach out to their Early Years and Childcare Adviser (EYCA) for support or training.
