Flu vaccination: a message for early years practitioners from the UK Health Security Agency

As winter approaches, seasonal illnesses like flu become more common. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has developed important information for early years practitioners about flu vaccination, and we encourage you to share this with providers in your local area. Together, we can help ensure that as many children as possible—and the professionals who care for them—are protected.

The annual flu vaccination programme

The flu vaccination programme for preschool children began on 1 September 2025. All children aged 2 and 3 years old (on 31 August before the autumn programme starts) are eligible for a free flu vaccine, delivered as a quick and painless nasal spray. In addition, some children aged 6 months and older in specific clinical risk groups are also eligible.

Unfortunately, not all parents are aware of this offer or take it up. We’re reminding early years educators now because winter is a peak time for flu and other seasonal illnesses. Raising awareness can make a big difference.

Your role in protecting children

Early years practitioners play a vital role in informing parents about the flu vaccination programme. UKHSA provides guidance for settings on the nasal flu vaccine and preventing the spread of flu. Free resources are available, including:

  • Information leaflets for parents and carers
  • Posters for display in settings

These can be ordered at no cost: Flu vaccination for children: leaflets and posters – GOV.UK

Why flu vaccination matters

Flu is a common infection in babies and young children and can be very unpleasant. Children under five have some of the highest hospital admission rates for flu compared to other age groups.

Vaccinating children each year:

  • Protects them individually
  • Reduces flu spread to families and the wider community
  • Helps protect vulnerable people at risk of serious illness
  • Supports a healthy working environment in nurseries and childcare settings by reducing transmission to staff

Where can children get vaccinated?

Preschool children can receive the flu vaccine at their GP surgery and some participating community pharmacies.

For children who cannot have the nasal spray for medical or faith reasons, an alternative injectable vaccine is available. This option does not contain porcine gelatine.
