Withdrawn Plans for B3232 Bypass

Plans for a by-pass on the B3232, Newton Tracey have been withdrawn on the basis that the project was never likely to be carried out. Please provide details of the reasoning which was used to support this statement.

Please refer to this webpage for information regarding the decision.

This is one of many historic bypass or highway improvement schemes that includes Monkleigh, Hoops Inn, Horns Cross and Braunton.  Outline proposals were developed, and planning permissions achieved which then allowed corridors of land to be retained in advance of potential future funding.  Due to changes in Government policy towards the end of the last century these schemes were never likely to proceed.   As these schemes had to be declared on land searches and this had an impact on house sales, the County took the view to ‘abandon’ schemes like this.  The best estimate is this would have been around the early 2000’s.

The County Council regularly reviews its assets and disposes of pieces of orphaned land if it is confident that it is no longer beneficial to retain them.
