1. Please state how much was spent on repairing defective road surface/potholes (roads only, not pavements) in 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22?
Devon County Council does not hold this information. This is because we do not have a specific budget for repairing potholes, instead we have a Safety Defects budget. Examples of the types of work funded through this budget are footway trips and rocking slabs, defective ironwork, damaged fencing, overgrown hedges and bushes etc.
Information relating to safety defects can be found in our Highway Safety Policy available on our website.
A previous Freedom of Information request response also provides information relating to pothole repairs which can be viewed here.
2. Please state how much was spent on carriageway resurfacing in 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22?
Devon County Council (DCC) does not hold this information as we do not hold information relating specifically to amounts spent on carriageway resurfacing as we do not have a specific budget for this. Instead, we have a Safety Defect budget, as explained in response to Question 1.
3. How many miles of carriageway resurfacing took place in 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22?
Devon County Council does not hold this information.
4. Please state whether the council predominantly resurfaces using polymer modified stone asphalt, stone mastic asphalt or other?
Devon County Council use proprietary warm mix asphalt materials when resurfacing the higher maintenance category roads that include polymer modified SMA derived materials. When resurfacing the minor maintenance category roads the default material would be warm mix asphalt concrete in the majority of situations, however where there are high levels of stress the material can be modified using a polymer modified bitumen.
5. Please state how much was paid out (in £) to drivers making a claim for damage caused to their vehicles due to defective road surface/potholes in 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22?
2018/19 – £34,829
2019/20 – £35,576
2020/21 – £81,468
2021/22 – £48,475
