Road Maintenance and Compensation

The National Highways definition of the Local Road Network is that portion of the Road Network for which a Local Government is responsible, and is eligible for funding from the State Government to operate and maintain. With this in mind, for the last full year for which figures are available, please would you disclose:

1. The total number of potholes reported to your council across your Local Road Network.

For the financial year 2023/24 to date:
Total number of pothole reports received from the public (which may or may not have resulted in action): 52,000
Total number of potholes passed to contractor for repair (either from formal inspections or reactive inspections): 53,000

2. The total amount of money spent compensating drivers for successful claims for vehicle damage from potholes in your Local Road Network.

£58,091 (based on payments made for claims received from 01/01/23 – 01/01/24).

3. The total value of funding allocated by your council for road maintenance, relating directly to pothole reports and repairs across your Local Road Network.

We do not hold expenditure information relating specifically to potholes. Expenditure on potholes, including the cost of inspections, is contained within the total expenditure on Highway safety defect repairs, the total value of which in 2022/23 was £7,276.074.47.
