What is your current process for recycling and disposing of redundant IT equipment? What steps are involved? Please include details on how you store them, if collected then by who and when and what paperwork you receive and how you ensure data protection.
Devon County Council use a company called ICT Reverse for our recycling and disposal needs.
Redundant IT kit is returned to a central warehouse and kept until such time that it can be disposed of.
A collection request is made to ICT Reverse, the date and time confirmed.
ICT reverse come to site to collect and take kit away to process accordingly.
A waste transfer note is provided detailing what has been taken away, from where, the person collecting it (transferee) and the transfer. This is signed by both parties and kept for 2 years in line with legislation detailed in the WEEE directive (Waste Electrical and Electrical Equipment).
Working with Blancco, (global leader in data erasure and secure data destruction software) data is managed professionally and securely; the hard drive is removed and shredded to ensure complete data destruction.
A full due diligence pack is provided including necessary certification to demonstrate compliance with latest legislation in the event of any environmental audits.
An Asset Audit Report is provided, encompassing an inventory breakdown and recovery certificate is provided. This is sent back to us on completion of the disposal request.
If handling mobile phones, we:
Remove and recycle/dispose of any packaging, chargers and cables
Extract the sim card from the phone and record the IMEI and SIM numbers on an internal system
Arrange for collection as described above
ICT reverse undertake a grading assessment of returned phones and process accordingly.
