1. On what date was the damage to the carriageway in Hind Street initially reported and what is the target date for full rectification of the road surface?
This was initially reported by members of the public on the 16th December 2024 and inspected the following day on the 17th December 2024. From this inspection it was identified that the defective road surface met the intervention criteria as per our Highway Safety Policy. A defect was raised at the location, with a required completion date of 24th December 2024.
The site was visited by our contractor on the 20th December 2024, but due to the location being in close proximity to the entrance of the supermarket, and a road closure needing to be organised to safely undertake the works, they were unable to undertake the repair whilst on site and further planning was required to complete the works. These works were completed under a night time road closure on the 29th January 2025.
2.What priority has been given to effect a permanent repair to the collapsed section of Chineway?
An initial site assessment from the road indicated simple edge of carriageway subsidence, deemed a low priority, and barriers placed at the site.
Following further subsidence Temporary Traffic Lights were placed.
Access onto private land and vegetation clearance were required to fully assess the structure. This was granted in mid- November, and vegetation clearance commenced mid- December 2024.
The site was inspected mid- January following the vegetation clearance, and a road closure was deemed necessary at this time for the safety of the travelling public.
This scheme is a high priority.
3. On what date will the decision to repair the roadway be taken?
The decision to repair has already been made. Work is planned to start on 12 February. Please information at the following link Work due to start next week on road repairs near Ottery St Mary – News.
4. What action is proposed to effect a permanent repair to Chineway Hill where damage was caused by the fallen tree?
The area of the reported damage was made safe by the installation of appropriate signing and guarding. The damage has been assessed and an appropriate repair is planned to be undertaken whilst the current road closure is in place.
