I understand that Learn Devon has dropped all arts, crafts and non-English languages courses from its offering. Can you please tell me how this decision was made? Who made it, when, and with what rationale?
The principal funding body of Learn Devon, the Education & Skills Funding Agency, has prioritised learning that aligns with their funding goals, primarily focusing on progression. They have clearly stated that funding should not be used solely for leisure purposes. The consequence of this requirement is that Learn Devon has been required to amend its training courses and programmes and a revised programme was agreed by Economy Enterprise and Skills Senior Management Team in August 2022.
The rationale for the revised programme of courses is that Learn Devon funder has prioritised other courses in line with the requirements of its main funder. No other funds are available to subsidise such courses. Furthermore, an evaluation of the attendance at the current programmes of arts and craft courses showed a significant decline in attendance with several courses cancelled due to poor take up. We will continue to collaborate with local communities, schools, colleges, and the County Council to develop a wide range of subjects that support families, with a focus on core skills such as English, Maths, digital skills, and employment preparation. Additionally, we aim to provide an inclusive program for individuals with disabilities.
