Animal Feed
The data given relates to the Heart of the South West Trading Standards area – which includes the areas covered by Devon County Council, Plymouth City Council, Somerset Council and Torbay Council.
1. How many officers are in the inspections of animal feed establishments within your council?
Our Regulatory Support Rural team carries out the majority of our inspections of establishments and farms involved with the production, mixing, transport and storage of animal feed. It has 11.5 FTE staff.
2. How many feed establishments are in the council area?
Our database holds details of 20,731 registered or approved animal feed premises
3. How many of these establishments have been inspected within the last 3 years?
807 premises were visited in the last 3 years

N/A – they were not undertaken by an external organisation.
Animal Health & Welfare
5. How many officers are involved in the inspection of premises for the purposes of animal health and welfare?
Our Regulatory Support Rural team carries out the majority of our inspections of establishments and farms for the purposes of animal health and welfare. It has 11.5 FTE staff.
6. How many premises within the council area require an inspection in relation to animal health and welfare?
All of our animal health and welfare inspections are targeted based on intelligence received by us.
7. Is there an animal market within the council area?
There are 11 operational livestock markets in the area covered by Heart of the South West Trading Standards.
8. How many officers visit these animal markets, and what frequency?
As above, our Regulatory Support rural team carries out these visits. It has 11.5 FTE staff.
Livestock markets are visited on a flexible, intelligence and risk based approach through each year. We also aim to attend all periodic relicensing visits with Animal and Plant Health Agency vets.
9. If these inspections are undertaken by an external agency or contractor, please provide the name of the Agency.
Licensing inspections are also carried out by Animal and Plant Health Agency staff, in conjunction with Trading Standards.

We do not have a licensing register for animal related activities. In the area covered by Heart of the South West Trading Standards, this function is carried out by licensing teams at district and unitary authorities, as opposed to by Trading Standards.
