I would like to request the following information regarding the provision of real time audio-visual announcements at bus stops within your council’s area:
1. Total Number of Bus Stops:
The total number of bus stops in your council area.
Approximately 6000-6500 bus stops. Devon County Council does not have an exact figure and the figure is constantly changing.
2. Number of Bus Stops fitted with real time audio information systems:
The number of bus stops that are equipped with audio information.
To date there are 53 stops with REACT, although we have a continuing program to update existing real time units with this capability.
3. Number of Bus Stops with real time visual information:
The number of bus stops that are equipped with visual announcements.
To date there are approximately 80 stops with real time visual information but again there is a continuing program to roll out more units as part of our current Bus Service Improvement Plan.
4. Implementation Details:
a. A brief description of the criteria or policy used to determine which bus stops are equipped with audio and/or visual announcements.
Stops in key transport interchange locations (bus stations, train stations, town centres), and on key higher frequency bus corridors. Or where these signs are funded by external third party contributions.
b. A brief description of the requirements of audio and/or visual announcements, as defined by the local transport authority.
All newly installed real time signs are fitted with REACT audio technology, accessible via the react-access.com app. We are looking to replace our estate so all existing signs will also have this capability at the end of the roll out.
Visual display layouts were designed to be accessible by those with vision impairment.
5. Future Plans:
Any future plans or strategies for increasing the coverage of audio and/or visual announcements at bus stops.
We have requested future government funding to continue the roll out of audio/visual real time signs through our 2024 Bus Service Improvement Plan submission. We are awaiting decision from Government regarding this future funding.
