Asbestos Services in Schools

1. For the state-funded schools within your local authority, can you please provide the spend for the last full available year (stating which one) on asbestos surveying and associated services (e.g. inspection, monitoring and testing, but excluding removal) Segmented by management / reinspection vs refurbishment / demolition surveys (if possible)

£400 new management surveys
£27,000 on annual re-inspections
17 x R&D surveys – cost unknown – works are devolved.
£11,900 on updating registers from demolition, changes, re-inspections

Please provide the budget if spend is not available. N/A

2. How many asbestos surveys did the overall spend relate to (split between Management / reinspection surveys and Refurbishment / demolition)?

1 new management survey / 125 annual re-inspections / 17 R&D surveys.

3. What number (and hence %) of your schools last year received:

A management / reinspection survey – 100% of schools with known Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) received a reinspection.

A refurbishment / demolition survey – 13.5%

4. With what frequency do you carry out each of these surveys (e.g. annually, every two years, as and when required)?

Annual check on the condition of known ACM’s.

5. Could you provide the number of schools that you manage and the percentage of that contain asbestos?

Last year 146 of 157 subscribed to a buyback service which included compliance. Those that do not subscribe must prove they have similar arrangements in place. 100% of LEA schools have a centralised asbestos register and must follow centralised policies. 125 of 157 contain at least one ACM.
