Please can you provide the following information about apprentices working in your local authority and local authority maintained schools:

1. What apprenticeship qualifications and levels does your council offer to externally recruited apprentices and existing employees within your council or local authority maintained schools?

Devon County Council offers apprenticeships from level 2-7 for externally recruited and existing employees both within the Council and maintained schools. We have utilised 68 different apprenticeship standards since 2017.

2. For September 2021 – July 2022:

a) What was the annual rate of pay for an: externally recruited apprentice working in the council, or a local authority maintained school?

Annual rates of pay will differ depending on the job role and apprenticeship. All
apprentices are paid a minimum of Grade A (as of April 2022 this was £20,258).

b) Did existing employees while doing an apprenticeship in the council or a local authority maintained school remain on the same pay as for their substantive post?

Yes

c) What was the total number of apprentices that started as an:

1) Externally recruited apprentice to do an apprenticeship scheme in:

I. the Council.

From September 2021 – July 2022 = 37

II. a local authority maintained school.

From September 2021 – July 2022 = 6

2) Existing employees that started an apprenticeship as part of their career progression in:

I. the Council.

From September 2021 – July 2022 = 56 II. a local authority maintained school.

From September 2021 – July 2022 = 20

d) What was the total number of apprenticeship starts broken down by age range:

I. 18-24 – 48 apprentices
II. 25-34 – 26 apprentices
III. 35-44 – 28 apprentices
IV. 45-54 – 13 apprentices
V. 55-64 – 3 apprentices

(1 was under 18)

e) What was the total number of apprenticeship starts broken down by race, disability, gender identity and sexual orientation?

We only hold the data required to administer the apprenticeship levy.

f) Of the total number of starts, what number of apprentices completed, left and continued their apprenticeship scheme?

61 completed, 15 left and 43 still completing.

g) What number of externally recruited apprentices got a permanent job at the end of their apprenticeship?

18 of these apprentices to date have got a permanent job with corporate DCC after their apprenticeship.

3. For September 2022 – July 2023:

a) What was the annual rate of pay for an: externally recruited apprentice working in the Council, or a local authority maintained school?

Annual rates of pay will differ depending on the job role and apprenticeship. All apprentices
are paid a minimum of Grade A (as of April 2023 this was £20,441).

b) Did existing employees while doing an apprenticeship in the council or a local authority maintained school remain on the same pay as for their substantive post?

Yes

c) What was the total number of apprentices that started as an:

1) Externally recruited apprentice to do an apprenticeship scheme in:

I. the Council.

From September 2022 – July 2023 = 40

II. a local authority maintained school.

From September 2022 – July 2023 = 4

2) Existing employees that started an apprenticeship as part of their career progression in:

I. the Council

From September 2022 – July 2023 = 62

II. a local authority maintained school.

From September 2022 – July 2023 = 4

d) What was the total number of apprenticeship starts broken down by age range:

I. 18-24 – 39 apprentices
II. 25-34 – 29 apprentices
III. 35-44 – 28 apprentices
IV. 45-54 – 8 apprentices
V. 55-64 – 2 apprentices

(4 were under 18)

e) What was the total number of apprenticeship starts broken down by race, disability, gender identity and sexual orientation?

We only hold the data required to administer the apprenticeship levy.

f) Of the total number of starts, what number of apprentices completed, left and continued their apprenticeship scheme?

3 completed, 11 left and 96 still completing.

g) What number of externally recruited apprentices got a permanent job at the end of their apprenticeship?

N/A – apprentices completed during this timeframe where not externally recruited.
