Radon levels in schools

Please could we submit the following request under the Freedom of Information Act regarding each school or college in your authority.

1. Does the school have a system in place for measuring and dealing with radon levels?

Yes.

2. What is this system?

If the site is in scope, it is tested using radon monitors supplied by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). If the building falls below the action level, the site will be set for retesting in 7 to 10 years. Where a site falls above the action level then Devon County Council (DCC) take action, normally as advised by UKHSA. Where pumps are fitted, they are checked to be running every 6 months.

3. When was each site last tested for radon and what was the method of testing?

Each site that is in scope is tested every 7-10 years using UKHSA monitors.

4. For each site, what were the top 10 highest readings in bq/m3 during these tests and where were these readings located?

The information we hold for this can be found at the following link Radon in Schools.

5. In which previous years was radon testing carried out?

Please see link at question 4.

6. What were the readings during these tests?

Please see link at question 4.

7. Has the site had radon mediation measures put in place, ie ventilation/a mechanical sump?

Please see link at question 4.

8. If so, what was the nature of the works and when were carried out?

Please see link at question 4.

9. Were parents informed of radon levels/mediation works?

There is no communication from Devon County Council, we would refer them to each school.

10. What was the cost for the works?

Devon County Council does not hold this information.

11. If works were done, was testing carried out again afterwards?

Yes retests scheduled.

12. If retesting was carried out, what were the subsequent comparable readings?

Please see link at question 4.
