Who assessed the work
The road was subject to its annual highway safety inspection, which took place on 2nd May. Details around how our inspections take place can be found in our Highway Safety Policy
Who ordered the work
As per above, the defect would have been identified by a trained Highway Safety Inspector.
What was the rational for just filling two potholes in this road and not doing the whole road
The attending inspectors will have been looking for actionable safety defects that meet investigatory criteria, set out in our Highway Safety Policy. We will proactively repair emerging, localised non-safety or ‘serviceability’ defects as and when resource allows as we recognise the benefits and efficiencies around dealing with these defects whilst we have operatives, plant and material on site. This may not always be possible for roads where the extent of deterioration is such that only a larger maintenance scheme would be economically viable or during exceptionally busy periods, when we must focus of our efforts on those defects that are safety critical to users of the network.
Total cost of this job
Our current contractual arrangement with regards to payment means that we do not pay our contractor on a repair by repair basis but a cost reimbursable basis for plant, material, operatives, sub-contractor costs etc used each day. Our average costs per pothole repair for the financial year 2023/24 was around £100.
