In your local authority, confirm the total number of fines that were paid as a result of absence from mainstream school, broken down by school type – including primary, secondary, and special schools, for the academic years of 2018/2019, 2021/2022, and 2022/2023.
We do not hold information for the academic year 2018/2019.
For the following years, we can confirm the following:
From 2021 – 2022 – 832 penalty notices (PN) issued, that covers the second point how many individuals were in receipt of fines
2022 – 2023 – 3,166 PN’s issued
2023 up until 10th April 2024 – 1,811 issued
Of these, 3,919 were paid. Others would have been progressed to court or withdrawn.
We are not able to break this down by school type; we do not hold a central record of this information. This would therefore require a manual review of the 5,000+ records referred to above. Compliance with this request would exceed the appropriate cost limit under Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 which is £450 or 18 hours of officer time due to the number of records held.
Under the Act, there is a duty to provide advice and assistance as to how a request can be refined to fit within the appropriate limit. Unfortunately this is not possible for this request.
