Accidents on the A383 Ashburton Road

I am writing to you as part of a Freedom Of Information request regarding the number of recorded accidents on the A383 Ashburton Road on the edge of Newton Abbot. Just to confirm, we are talking about the island on the A383 Ashburton Road, just past the entrance to Barton Drive.

My assessment is that the changes to the road layout have made matters worse, which is why it will be interesting to find out how many instances have been reported both prior and since the changes.

The location and numbers of recorded collisions for the latest five year period can be viewed
online at Collision map – Road and Transport (devon.gov.uk)

Over the last five year period 2018-2022, there have been two recorded slight
injury category collisions in the vicinity of the new traffic island\pedestrian refuge. One occurred prior to the introduction of the island. And one occurred after the island was constructed. Both of these collisions took place to the west of the current island location. The collision that occurred after its construction involved the occupant of a parked car opening a door into the path of a cyclist. The collision that occurred before the island was constructed involved the driver of a single vehicle losing control.

All in year collision records held by the police are provisional until submitted to and published by the Department for Transport later in 2024. But there has been one injury collision here this year that we are currently aware of. This collision involved a single vehicle losing control near the island. Traffic monitoring, Community Speed Watch and police officer enforcement activities have all evidenced speeding along Ashburton Road. And the route has recently been identified for permanent speed camera enforcement.
