A resurfacing scheme planned for Meldon Viaduct has been re-scheduled for later in the year.
Work on the viaduct near Okehampton is now due to start on Monday 11 November and is expected to take around three weeks, during which time it will be temporarily closed.
The 150-year-old viaduct, which is a Scheduled Monument, was originally due to be closed for maintenance from Monday 9 September to Friday 27 September.
These initial dates were chosen, following discussions with key stakeholders and local businesses, to avoid the summer holidays and autumn half term while also trying to accommodate limited availability of the specialist contractor to carry out the work. However, after further feedback from local businesses the scheme has been put back to November.
The scheme involves removal of the existing anti-slip surface and installation of new anti-slip boards on the 165-metre span of the viaduct. The timber deck will also be inspected to ensure it is structurally safe, and where necessary it will be replaced.
Meldon Viaduct has been used by cyclists and pedestrians as part of the Granite Way since 1996. Throughout the duration of the maintenance scheme, temporary closure notices will be signed at key locations on the Granite Way to inform walkers and cyclists they will not be able to access the viaduct. Unfortunately, there is no suitable “like for like” diversion route during the closure.
Work will be carried out by Midland Industrial Flooring Ltd on behalf of Devon County Council.
