Changes to Probationary Policy

To align with upcoming national employment legislation, several changes are being introduced. These apply to Community and Voluntary Controlled schools; Foundation, Voluntary Aided schools and Trusts may adopt them.

From 1st January 2027, the qualifying period for unfair dismissal reduces from two years to six months. The legislation applies retrospectively. Anyone joining DCC from 1st July 2026 will gain unfair dismissal protection once they reach six months’ service.

Key policy changes

  • A probationary period of up to six‑months with the removal of the optional three‑month extension. After six months, any performance concerns will be managed under the Capability Policy.
  • Probation of up to 6 months will now apply to all new starters, including those joining DCC with existing continuous local government service.
