Letter to Schools from Teacher Unions – Pension Indexation

Your school may have received a letter produced jointly by the trade unions/professional associations representing teachers, regarding ‘Indexation in the Teachers Pension Scheme’. A copy of the letter, which outlines the issues and asks schools to consider making additional payments to affected staff, can be found here.

The Local Government Association has raised this matter with the DfE and their pensions team is currently reviewing the policy issues in discussion with the trade unions. Until this review is completed, the DfE is unable to provide further advice.

The DfE has stated that a response to the joint union letter is a matter for individual schools to determine within the remit of the school’s pay structure. Whilst we are aware that schools may choose to exercise the flexibility that their pay structures allow and make additional payments to staff as per the letter, we await guidance from the LGA with the outcome of the policy review before communicating further advice.
