Make it a World Cup to remember – for the right reasons

As the football World Cup kicks off, Devon County Council is encouraging residents to enjoy the tournament safely and look out for one another.

The tournament, which is running until Sunday 19 July, will see people across Devon come together with friends, family and communities to share in the excitement.

Devon’s Public Health team says that major events, like the World Cup, are also linked to increases in harmful behaviours and incidents, particularly around alcohol use, gambling, drug-use and domestic abuse.

They have launched a campaign to raise awareness of these risks and provide practical steps to reduce harm and to encourage everyone to look out for one another.

This includes deciding in advance your limits with alcohol (if you drink), understanding the risks around drugs, staying in control of smoking cravings and keeping gambling in check.

The campaign highlights three simple ways to stay safe:

  • Stay in control – set limits before kick-off and stick to them, drink within your limits (if you drink), avoid mixing drugs and alcohol, set a gambling budget (if you gamble) and avoid chasing losses
  • Get home safely – plan your journey in advance and never drink or drug drive
  • Look out for others – check in on friends, know the signs of domestic abuse and trust your instincts. If you are out and tensions are rising, step away from conflict and be respectful

While most people will enjoy the tournament responsibly, evidence shows that major sporting events can increase risks such as excessive drinking, gambling-related harm and drug use. Incidents of domestic abuse are also known to rise during major tournaments, particularly around match days.

Steve Brown, Director of Public Health at Devon County Council, said:

“The World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for people across Devon to come together and enjoy time with friends, family and their communities.

“For most, it will be a positive and enjoyable experience, but we know that major sporting events can bring increased risks, particularly around alcohol, gambling and heightened emotions.

“That’s why we’re encouraging people to plan ahead, know their limits, and look out for one another. Small actions can make a big difference.

“It’s also important that people are aware that support is available. If something doesn’t feel right, for you or someone else, please trust your instincts and seek help.”

Devon County Council is working with partners across the county to raise awareness of these issues and ensure people know how to access support if they need it.
