The Kurdish Community Devon began with a small group of Kurdish students at the University of Exeter in 2010 and later extended its works to embrace other Kurdish people living across Devon, including small business owners and their workers, families and friends. Kurdish people have spread around the world over the last three decades, mainly due to political situations in their home countries.

The Kurdish Community Devon functions as a hub for the cultural, social, and political activities of Kurds living in Devon. We aim:

  • to be a bridge between the Kurds and all the other ethnic groups living in Devon via our activities which are open not only to the Kurds but to everyone in the region and beyond.
  • to encourage the Kurdish community to integrate within wider society
  • to assist our community members to access services and education
  • to preserve and promote the richness of the Kurdish culture to wider society and to future generations following the migration of first generations from our homelands.

Our activities include helping to coordinate:

  • the Kurdish Spring/ New Year Newroz, celebration in March
  • monthly Kurdish film screenings at the Phoenix
  • Kurdish Traditional Dance teaching sessions
  • Kurdish Language and Tembur (a traditional music instrument) classes for children aged between 7 and 14.

We can also arrange academic and non-academic seminars and talks regarding Kurdish issues in the Middle East and Europe.
