RSD is an independent local charity based at the Exeter Community Centre. We offer a range of services to the local refugee and asylum seeker community including:
- twice-weekly drop-in: offering information, support, and signposting for accessing legal services and for navigating life in the UK in general
- weekly immigration clinic: accredited by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner to offer level-2 advice
- outreach support: tailored packages of support to individuals who have complex cases and/or live outside of Exeter
- destitution relief: coordinating referrals to crisis services and providing immediate financial support via the RSD emergency fund
- education and employability: providing English language and employment training via a network of qualified volunteer tutors
- women’s group: monthly activities for female clients and their children
- refugee resettlement: since 2016, we have been working in partnership with Devon County Council (DCC) to deliver support to over 30 families resettled in Devon as a result of the war in Syria under the government’s Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS). In 2019, DCC awarded us the contract for the provision of integration casework in wider Devon, effectively making us their chosen provider for Syrian family relocation and integration activities in Devon until 2023.
- Community allotment: providing a safe space for refugees to grow their own fruit and vegetables, and to donate excess produce to others in need
- RAMP (refugees as medical professionals) Devon: assisting forced migrants who are qualified and registered health practitioners in their own country to follow an appropriate training pathway to enable them to work professionally in this country. We support doctors, dentists, veterinary surgeons, nurses, dental nurses, dieticians, occupational therapists, podiatrists, pharmacists, speech therapists, optometrists, and radiographers.
