Hikmat Devon CIC is a member-led community interest company providing services to BAME people living in Devon and Torbay.
Our purpose is:
- to empower individuals, families, and communities to access the skills, employment, housing, education, leisure pursuits, and well-being to which they are entitled, free from discrimination and disadvantage
- to provide statutory and other mainstream services with good quality local information through the provision of bespoke consultation events and other forms of data capture
- to promote good relations between Devon’s minority ethnic and mainstream white British residents
Since 2005, Hikmat has been developing several strands of service provision and currently delivers around 2,000 in-person sessions annually through:
- Hikmat Hub Family Sessions (monthly on Thursdays, includes sports)
- Hikmat Chinese Group (Mandarin and Cantonese-speaking, weekly on Tuesdays)
- Hikmat Family Zoom Club (multicultural, children up to 16, school holidays and lockdown)
- video editing courses (beginners and advanced, all ages)
- Sweetie Ladies (East and Southeast Asian women, North Devon, Sundays)
- Hikmat Honeysuckles Allotment
- Hikmat Line Dancing (multi-cultural, alternate Wednesdays)
- Hikmat Fit and Fun (multicultural, indoor sports, alternate Saturdays)
- Community Covid Champions (multi-lingual information and support)
- Zenofilya Training (multi-cultural skills training and confidence building)
- Counselling (6 session solution-focused counselling)
- refugee and asylum seeker Resettlement Schemes
- consultation and community engagement (through the Devon Engagement Service)
We also offer individual support to people needing assistance with navigating health and social care pathways, accessing school admissions, managing carers’ issues, completing forms, victim support, resettlement, and other challenges of daily life.
Our staff team combines a considerable wealth of spoken and written languages, clinical skills, and other professional training, as well as lived experience of migration and translocation.
Our operating model comprises good service user to staff ratios, supplemented by outsourced professional trainers, teachers, and volunteers.
