Beyond Borders Totnes & District is a network, co-ordinated by a small volunteer core group, that facilitates local people lending support to local asylum seekers and refugees at this daunting time.
Established in 2015 during the Syrian crisis, most volunteers are in Totnes and the surrounding areas. We carefully collaborate with official refugee support organisations. We organise or help coordinate a number of activities including:
- outings to local farms, retreat centres and other places
- events involving local artists and musicians
- English language sessions.
We also provide the following support:
- signposting to volunteering opportunities such as tree planting or assisting at local libraries
- collaborating in local cinema and theatre initiatives to raise awareness
- fundraising for refugee family reunions
- publishing a monthly email newsletter
- channelling donations to meet practical needs
- coordinating small supplies of fresh food bags, food boxes and Welcome boxes.
Most refugees and asylum seekers we link with are in Plymouth and the Torbay area.
