Do I Need an SIA Licence?

If you work in security, you may need an SIA Licence. SIA stands for “Security Industry Authority”.

You DO NOT usually need an SIA licence for the following:

  • volunteering (i.e. not receiving pay)
  • checking invitations for an event or that people have paid
  • showing people to seats at a venue, toilets or first-aid facilities etc.
  • working at an airport if you are responsible for screening or access.
  • working at a sports ground with an active safety certificate.
  • working for a company that employs you directly e.g. security at a supermarket (however, you will still need a licence if the company sells alcohol, organises gambling or holds boxing matches).

You DO usually need an SIA licence for the following:

  • transport valuable property in a security vehicle
  • bodyguard
  • guard a door at casinos, nightclubs, pubs, boxing arenas
  • CCTV surveillance
  • security guard
  • guarding important keys
