Commendation for child of Devon foster family in BBC Make a Difference Awards

Posted on: 12 Oct 2026

With 271 foster homes in Devon and at a time when fostering remains a key priority for the region, it’s important to recognise and celebrate the vital role played by families of foster carers during Children of Foster Carers Week from 12 – 18 October 2026.

Watch our short video of Kim and Brody, a Devon foster family.

Six-year-old Brody, the child of a proactive foster family in Devon, was nominated for the Young Hero category of the BBC Make a Difference Awards in recognition of the support he gives to children arriving at his home through fostering.

Brody represents hundreds of children in the area who welcome and support young people in care, helping them feel happy, safe and more settled during difficult and uncertain circumstances.

Kim St Barbe, Brody’s mum and Fostering Enquiry Line Practitioner at Devon County Council, said:

“We are extremely proud of Brody; in everything he does daily and for being shortlisted for the Young Hero award. Brody helps us make a lasting difference to all the children we care for, whether it’s sharing his toys, introducing them to family routines, offering friendly smiles and being a playmate.

“Fostering is challenging at times but extremely rewarding and it’s really important to have supportive families on board.”

Councillor Richard Jefferies, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

“Children of Foster Carers Week recognises that fostering is a whole-family commitment. Families share their homes, and the children of those families share their parents time and love with children who need care and support, helping them feel accepted.

We are incredibly proud of Brody and delighted to see him recognised as a finalist in the BBC Make a Difference Awards. His kindness and generosity demonstrate the very best of what fostering is all about, and he is a wonderful example of the positive difference carers make every day.”

With 825 children in need of care in Devon, residents are being encouraged to learn more about fostering and the life-changing impact it can have.
