A key milestone has been reached on the Cullompton Relief Road scheme, with the successful installation of a new shared-use bridge on Cullompton Community Association (CCA) land, enabling the transfer of replacement public open space land and supporting the next phase of the project.
The bridge will provide a dedicated connection for people walking, wheeling and cycling, helping to improve access. The completion of the structure marks the transfer of replacement land to the west of the bridge to the CCA, ensuring continued public access to local green spaces while providing connections to new and enhanced open spaces, community facilities and local routes. This important step secures the future use of the land for the benefit of local communities and supports the wider vision of the scheme.
The transfer also enables the contractor to take ownership of the remaining land required for the relief road, allowing the project to move into its next phase of construction. With main construction works now underway, the Cullompton Relief Road is expected to be operational in early 2028. The occasion was marked by a turf-cutting ceremony attended by contract partners and local councillors to celebrate the availability of the new land and the progress being made towards the delivery of the Relief Road.
Councillor James Buczkowski, the local county councillor for Cullompton and Bradninch said:
“This is an important milestone for the Cullompton Relief Road scheme and for the local community. The installation of the new shared-use bridge will help ensure that people can continue to access key community spaces while also supporting safer and more sustainable ways to move around.”
Councillor Steve Keable, Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Regeneration at Mid Devon District Council, said:

The Cullompton Relief Road scheme aims to reduce congestion in the town centre, improve air quality, and make it easier for people to move around the area. It will also unlock land to support the town’s future growth and long-term vitality.
