A lead Devon Councillor has welcomed the restoration of cheque deposit services for Lloyds Banking Group customers at Post Offices, describing it as a significant boost for rural communities, local businesses and residents across Devon.
Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, our Cabinet Member with responsibility for Rural Affairs, made the comment as the Post Office prepares to process cheque deposits for Lloyds Banking Group customers from the beginning of September 2026.
It means that residents, organisations, farmers and businesses will once again be able to bank cheques through their local Post Office.
The move follows Lloyds Banking Group’s decision earlier this year to reverse plans that would have ended cheque deposits at Post Offices and Banking Hubs.
The change came after widespread concern from councils, MPs and community groups, including Devon County Council, which warned that losing the service would disproportionately affect rural communities.
Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs and Broadband, said:
“This is excellent news for Devon and for all those people who continue to rely on cheque payments as part of their day-to-day lives.
“For many residents, charities, community organisations, farmers and small businesses, the local Post Office remains an essential service. The return of cheque deposits means people can once again carry out important banking transactions close to home, rather than travelling long distances to find alternative facilities.
“We were clear from the beginning that removing this service risked increasing financial exclusion, particularly in rural areas where access to banking services is already limited. I am delighted that those concerns were heard.
“Our Post Offices play a vital role in supporting communities and local economies. This decision strengthens their future and provides greater convenience for customers across Devon.”
More than half of Devon’s population lives in rural areas, where many communities have seen traditional bank branches close in recent years.
Devon County Council previously highlighted the importance of Post Offices and Banking Hubs in maintaining access to essential banking services and supporting people who may not be able to use digital banking.
Residents and businesses who bank with Lloyds Banking Group are encouraged to contact their local Post Office or check with Lloyds for details about the reinstated cheque deposit service and how it will operate from September.
Councillor Cottle-Hunkin added:
“I would like to thank everyone who campaigned for this change. It shows what can be achieved when communities, councils, MPs and industry partners work together to protect important local services.”
Councillor Stuart Rogers, Devon County Councillor for Ashburton and Buckfastleigh and a local Postmaster, also welcomed the announcement.
He said:
“This is very good news for Devon’s communities, businesses, farmers and voluntary organisations.
“Many people still depend on cheque payments and value the convenience of being able to carry out banking transactions at their local Post Office. For some customers, particularly in rural areas, this service is essential.
“Post Offices are a cornerstone of community life. Restoring cheque deposits helps protect local services and gives customers greater choice in how they manage their money.
“I would encourage people to continue supporting their local Post Office wherever possible. Every customer makes a difference and helps ensure these important community assets remain sustainable for the future.”
