Howton Lane improvement work starts next week

Road works sign and bollard

Work by Bloor Homes to widen Howton Lane as part of the Houghton Barton housing development in Newton Abbot will start on Monday (22 June) with the scheme expected to be completed by Friday 25 September.

Bloor Homes, Devon County Council and Teignbridge District Council have worked closely with the construction team to reduce the expected road closure from six months to around three months, minimising disruption wherever possible, including avoiding sensitive periods such as school exams.

The work will widen the southern end of Howton Lane, near Seale Hayne, and will include new footways and utility service connections.

Howton Lane will be closed from its junction with the A383 Ashburton Road to Farleigh Cottages while the work is carried out and will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.

A signed diversion will be in place throughout the scheme. It will initially run to the north of Newton Abbot via Bickington and Liverton, using the A382, Staplehill Road, Perry Lane and Howton Road.

A one-way system will also be in place at the northern end of Howton Lane and where Howton Road borders the Seale Hayne site.

During the later stages of the scheme, from around August, the diversion will switch to the south via the A383 Ashburton Road and A382 Bovey Tracey Road to connect to Staplehill Road.

The routes have been planned to avoid clashing with the A382 improvement works at Forches Cross which is expected to begin in early August.
