A379 at Stoke Fleming re-opens

Posted on:

The A379 at Stoke Fleming has re-opened this morning.

Almost 30 metres of privately owned boundary wall running alongside the highway has now been taken down and made safe.

The road has been closed for a month after a five-metre crack appeared in a 16ft high section of the wall – making it a safety risk to road users.

Emergency work has been carried out to remove the structure and that initial work has now been completed, making it possible to re-open the road.

The road has been swept and diversion signs are being taken down this morning.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said:

“Our thanks must go to the owner of the wall and their contractor for taking a positive decision and cracking on with the job, as well as everyone who has helped play a part in getting the road open safely. This has ensured that people that regularly use this road have not been put at risk. We will now await plans from the landowner for the replacement structure.”

Councillor Julian Brazil, County Councillor for Kingsbridge, said:

“Delighted to see the road is open again – it’s a great relief. Businesses and local residents have suffered enough. A massive thank you to Phil Elliott and his team and also to the Parish Chairman Councillor Struan Couper on everything they have done to make this happen.”

Designs will now have to be prepared for proposals on the rebuild of the wall.
