July 2023 Progress Update

The project includes various lengths of widening from two lanes to three lanes, providing overtaking opportunities, improved journey times and network resilience. Junction improvements at Landkey Junction, West Buckland Junction, Hacche Lane and Borners Bridge will give road safety benefits and improve turning manoeuvres. The section of road widening between Portmore Roundabout and Landkey Junction has been removed from the contract due to unforeseen increases in inflation (see information posted in February 2023). Of the works being delivered by the Main Contractor (Alun Griffiths) on a 5 mile stretch between Landkey Junction and Filleigh Cutting, a substantial amount of progress has been made.

Clearance work began early 2021 alongside the A361 and early works included detailed design of the whole project. The works have recently concentrated on the substantial earthworks required to construct embankments and cuttings into the undulating topography. A large new drainage system is now being built accommodating updated requirements for climate change and attenuation features. Works has started on laying some of the road construction asphaltic layers. Construction of a new bridge at West Buckland can now be seen with the foundations for abutments largely complete. Piling for foundations for the new Foot and cycle bridge at Landkey will be starting soon. The main works are expected to be completed in March 2024, with landscaping and the aftercare continuing for a number of years to ensure plants establish successfully.

During the summer there will be a lot of construction requiring traffic management that will restrict traffic flows. A lot of this will be carried out after 8pm and before 6am to reduce disruption. In order to complete the works there will be some disruption. To get up to date information, follow the Contractor’s Traffic Bulletins: –
