Admissions to nurseries that are run by schools

All schools have their own nursery admissions policy. Community and voluntary controlled schools must use the Devon County Council policy. For more information, you can take a look at our information for providers at Admissions to nursery places and foundation stage units in schools. This is in addition to the policy that the school must have for children starting in the reception and other classes. Schools should publish both policies on their website.

All early years groups will have their own admissions arrangements and you should ask each provider for their details. There are significant differences between the services that schools offer so it is important to carefully read the information available from each school. For example, some schools take children from when they are a few months old and other schools will take children from the term after they have had their third birthday.

The ages that children are admitted by schools is not the only difference. Some nurseries open as early as 7:30 am and close at 6:00 pm whilst others open only during the school day which is approximately 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. A few open all year round, but most open during term times only.

All these things (and more) need to be considered when choosing the nursery that is best for your child and best for you. You may find our tips for choosing and arranging childcare helpful.
