How Devon is performing – data and statistics


Overview

There are 108,546 pupils attending 413 schools in Devon in 2022/23 (including state-funded and independent schools). This is an increase of 399 pupils on the previous year (0.4%).

In January 2023, 8,400 children had an Education Health and Care plan (EHC plan) supported by Devon County Council.

In January 2023, there were 16,111 receiving SEN support in Devon’s schools.

Year 1 phonics attainment

  • 24% of pupils with an EHC plan in Devon met the expected standard, an improvement on 2021/22 when 23% met the expected standard. This is higher than the national average of 20%.
  • Devon pupils with an EHC plan performed better compared with nationally (20%) and statistical neighbours (19%).
  • 49% of Devon pupils with SEN support met the expected standard, higher than the national average (48%)

Key stage 1 (KS1) attainment

  • SEN pupils with an EHC plan do not perform as well as pupils with SEN support, this is the case both in Devon and nationally.
  • Pupils with EHC plans perform better than nationally in all subjects whilst those with SEN support are below this year.
  • In Devon, the performance of pupils with an EHC plan has improved in Maths and Science but decreased in Reading and Writing.
  • Those with SEN support have also improved in Maths, remained the same in Science but also decreased in Reading and Writing.

Key Stage 2 (KS2) attainment

In 2022/23 Devon pupils with an EHC plan performed better than nationally in all subjects in KS2.

Devon pupils receiving SEN support perform better than nationally in Reading but lower in all other subjects.

Key Stage 4 (KS4) outcomes

In 2021/22 outcomes for Devon SEN cohorts improved in the attainment 8, and in the English and Maths grade 9 – 5 measures.

  • Outcomes for pupils with an EHC plan were above the national average in each of the attainment measures in 2021/22.
  • In 2021/22 outcomes for pupils with SEN support were above the national average in the English and Maths GCSE measure, and are in line with nationally in the attainment 8 measure.
