Communication and interaction


Communication and interaction refers to the way children and young people communicate with those around them, how they response to people and develop social skills and relationships with others.

Communication and interaction needs include:

  • speech, language and communication difficulties
  • difficulty in communicating with others; they may have difficulty saying what they want to or understanding what is being said to them
  • delays in using language and shy away from talking
  • difficulty understanding or following social ‘rules’
  • autism (ASD)

Autism support

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them. Find out more about autism support in Devon.

Our Autism and Us workshops support parents or carers of children aged 5-16 who are either on the neurodiversity assessment waiting list, or who have received a diagnosis of autism.

ICT/SEN Team

The ICT/SEN Team supports access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and provides advice on using ICT to enhance learning for children and young people with sensory, physical, significant learning or communication and interaction difficulties.

Speech, language and communication needs (SCLN)

Speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) includes a range of speech related problems. There’s a wide range of SLCN support available in Devon.
