Areas of SEND need
SEND is categorised into four broad ‘areas of need’. Some children and young people may have needs in more than one of these areas.
Communication and interaction
Difficulties with speech, social interaction and friendships. Include neurodiverse conditions, such as autism, as well as speech, language and communication needs.
Cognition and learning
How children learn and think. Includes learning difficulties or disabilities ranging from moderate to profound, or specific learning difficulties, such as Dyslexia or Dyscalculia.
SEMH (social, emotional and mental health)
Difficulties in managing emotions and behaviour. Includes ADHD, mental health difficulties, social anxiety, confidence or self-esteem issues.
Sensory and or physical
Includes hearing or visual impairments (or both), physical disabilities, and motor skills difficulties.
