Being independent means being able to travel by yourself. If you need help with this, we will teach you how to travel safely and by yourself. We will also talk to you about any help you may need with transport as part of your plan.
Make it a habit to travel on public transport with your family. This way, you’ll become familiar with handling unexpected situations during your journeys. If you need assistance with catching a bus or train, don’t hesitate to seek help.
As part of your discussions about your education after 16 you will need to talk to the people around you about how you will get to sixth form or college.

Most young people are expected to arrange their own transport. Ask your parents or carers, children’s social care worker, school or enabler about how you can be supported to travel independently. Devon County Council may also be able to help you with some independent travel training.
Young people with significant SEND may be eligible for ongoing transport support.

Devon County Council can also provides Independent travel training. The purpose of the scheme is to help young people throughout Devon learn how to develop the skills required for safe, independent travel.
If you receive travel assistance as part of your SEND assessment, this will be reviewed on an annual basis and the transport team will contact you.
Support to help you travel to school will end when you are 19.
You may be eligible for support from adult services as part of your care package – we will talk to you about this on an individual basis dependent on your plans.
