Educational Psychology Service: Position Statement on the Use of AI and Generative AI

This position statement outlines the principles guiding the ethical and effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI models within our Educational Psychology Service. These principles are rooted in our commitment to children, young people, families, and educational communities. In addition to the principles described below, our use of AI is in line with Devon’s County Council’s Artificial Intelligence Policy.

1. Ethical and human-centred use

The best interests of children, young people, and families are our central guiding principle. AI should support human wellbeing and not be driven by profit or cost-cutting. Compassion is essential, especially for school staff and families navigating the use of AI.

2. Psychological integrity and professional standards

AI use must be informed by psychological theory and practice. All AI-generated content must be scrutinised and proofread to maintain quality and trust. We are committed to demonstrating credibility and reassuring families about the standards of AI-assisted work.

    3. Personalisation and Relational Practice

AI must enhance – not replace – the personalised and relational nature of psychological services. Maintaining a relational focus is essential, and all reports and interactions must reflect the individuality of each child.

      4. Inclusion, equity, and accessibility

AI must be used to support inclusion, neurodiversity, and special educational needs. We value closing the gap between affluent and disadvantaged families. AI must be a tool for equity, not a source of further division.

      5. Transparency and collaboration

Transparency and honesty in how AI is used is vital. We are committed to consulting with children and families about AI use. Open dialogue builds trust and shared understanding.

      6. Adaptability and innovation

AI offers opportunities to be more dynamic and adaptable in our practice. We value creativity, not just in how AI is used, but in how it supports thinking and problem-solving.

        7. Environmental responsibility

We consider the environmental impact of AI use as part of our ethical decision-making. Responsible use of digital resources is essential to our commitment to Devon County Council’s Environmental Policy Environmental Policy and Climate Emergency partnership .
