Supporting children with anxiety: Devon’s Overcoming Programme offers hope to families

Posted on: 14 Oct 2025

We know how hard it can be when your child feels too anxious to attend school. For many families, especially those with children who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), this can be a daily struggle filled with worry, frustration, and uncertainty.

To help, Devon County Council’s Educational Psychology Service has been running the Overcoming Programme, a supportive and practical course for parents and carers. The programme is designed to help families understand and manage anxiety, particularly when it affects school attendance.

Delivered online in small, friendly groups, the Overcoming Programme uses proven techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Over six weekly sessions, parents learn how to respond to anxious thoughts, build step-by-step plans, and support their child in feeling more confident and secure.

During the 2024/25 academic year, 30 parents completed the course. Many shared powerful stories of change – children who once struggled to leave the house now walking into school with a smile.

One parent said,

“This course has changed our lives. I feel confident and empowered to support my child.”

While not every family was able to attend, the feedback has helped shape future plans.

For 2025/26, the programme will include in-person groups and individual support, especially in the Exeter and East locality.

If your child is experiencing anxiety or difficulties attending school, you’re not alone.  The first step is to speak to your school for advice.
