Devon Music Education Hub, led by Devon County Council, is celebrating an exceptional summer of international performance opportunities, with local young musicians representing Devon on prestigious tours and cultural exchanges across Europe.
Young performers from the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO), Devon Youth Wind Orchestra (DYWO), Devon Youth Choir, and the Devon Youth Inspire Ensemble have travelled to France and Belgium in recent weeks, showcasing their talents on international stages while acting as cultural ambassadors for Devon.
A particular highlight was the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra’s invitation to perform at the renowned Vienne International Jazz Festival in France, one of Europe’s most respected jazz events. The performance was especially significant as the festival programme was headlined by internationally acclaimed saxophonist Emma Rawicz, a former member of DYJO who grew up in North Devon and has gone on to establish herself as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz.
Meanwhile, members of the Devon Youth Wind Orchestra travelled to Belgium, where they had the honour of performing as part of the prestigious Last Post Ceremony at The Menin Gate Memorial. The ensemble also laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Devon, paying tribute to those who lost their lives during the First World War in a moving act of remembrance witnessed by visitors from across the world.
Back in France, members of the Devon Youth Choir and the Devon Youth Inspire Ensemble undertook a very successful tour of Brittany, performing three concerts in the Saint-Malo area. Their programme was warmly received by local audiences and provided valuable opportunities for cultural exchange, musical collaboration, and friendship.

They give young musicians the opportunity to raise their aspirations, build confidence, develop teamwork and experience new cultures through music. Performing on international stages and representing their communities is something that will stay with these young people for the rest of their lives. The memories, friendships and musical experiences they gain are invaluable. I would like to thank all of the dedicated staff and volunteers make opportunities like these possible. Their commitment, care and professionalism ensure that young musicians from Devon can enjoy world-class experiences and continue to thrive both musically and personally.”
