Devon’s ‘Grow Our Own’ model sets benchmark for Educational Psychology recruitment

Posted on: 19 Sep 2025

Devon is setting a new standard in Educational Psychology recruitment with its innovative ‘Grow Our Own Psychologists’ initiative.

At a time when the profession faces national shortages, Devon’s inclusive and forward-thinking approach is gaining recognition across the south west.

The model supports aspiring psychologists from undergraduate level through to qualification, offering a clear and supportive pathway into the profession.

Currently, the county hosts a vibrant range of roles, including undergraduate Psychology Assistants, Assistant Educational Psychologists (EPs), and placement-year Trainee EPs.

These professionals gain hands-on experience in statutory work, early intervention support and community psychology, including pioneering practice in Family Hubs.

Rachel Hearn, Head of Educational Psychology & Specialist Support, said:

“We’re proud of the breadth of experience we offer. Our team is committed to impactful, person-centred services while nurturing future psychologists.”

Emma Clewer, Assistant EP, said:

“Working as an Assistant EP has been a valuable and enriching experience.

“It’s given me meaningful opportunities to apply psychology, work collaboratively, and explore a wide range of experiences aligned with my interests – helping prepare me for the next steps in my career.”

Luke Harrison, Assistant EP, said:

“The council’s EP Service has provided countless opportunities for learning over the last year. I’ve been involved in a range of exciting projects across the service, and have thoroughly enjoyed every day working as an Assistant EP.

“I’m excited for all the upcoming opportunities and projects that we’ll be involved in over the next academic year.

“Everyone in the service has been incredibly supportive and encouraging, offering us so many varied opportunities to learn and grow in the role.”

Emma Gomez Anton, Assistant EP, said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the Devon Educational Psychology Service and have felt consistently supported since joining the team, both in my personal wellbeing and professional development.

“It is a privilege to be a member of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion group, where we regularly engage in reflective discussions aimed at enhancing inclusive practices and improving collaborative approaches in our work with children and families across Devon.”

Devon’s success is underpinned by strong supervision, robust CPD, and a commitment to inclusive practice.

By investing in people and creating meaningful career pathways, the county is ensuring children and families continue to benefit from high-quality psychological services.
