Devon County Council support at The Promise school

Posted on: 23 Feb 2026

Devon County Council is working closely with Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust following a fire at the Promise school over the weekend.

No pupils or staff were on site at the time of the incident, and no one was injured.

While the Trust is leading the response to the fire, the Council is providing support to help manage the immediate impact and plan next steps.

This includes working with school leaders to ensure children continue to receive education.

Councillor Denise Bickley, the council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for services that support children with special educational needs and disabilities, said:

“This has been a deeply upsetting incident for children, families and the whole school community, and our thoughts are with everyone affected.

“We recognise how unsettling it must feel to face this level of disruption so suddenly.

“The Trust is leading the response, and we are working side‑by‑side with them to support the next steps and help ensure children can continue their education safely.”

Plans are still being developed, and more information will be shared with parents as soon as details are confirmed.

“The safety and wellbeing of pupils, families and staff is the council’s priority,” Councillor Bickley added.

“We will continue to work closely with the school and its community over the coming days.”
