If you’re disabled and need to make changes to your home, you may be able to get a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) from your local council. In Devon these grants are manged by your local district, borough or city council.
Who might get a grant
You may be able to get a DFG if you:
- are physically disabled
- have a learning disability
- have age-related needs
- are autistic
- have a cognitive impairment, like dementia
- have a progressive condition, like motor neurone disease
- have a terminal illness
- have a mental health condition
What the grant can cover
Changes or adaptations you may need to make to your home include:
- widening doors and installing ramps or grab rails
- improving access to rooms and facilities, for example with a stairlift, or level access shower
- improving access to your garden
- building an extension, for example a downstairs bedroom
- providing a heating system suitable for your needs
- adapting heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use
A Disabled Facilities Grant will not affect any benefits you get.
What you may get
The maximum grant value in England is up to £30,000, however this depends on your household income and any household savings (over £6,000).
Disabled children under the age of 18 can get a grant without their parents’ income being taken into account.
