A disused footbridge over the railway beside Torquay Road in Newton Abbot has been successfully removed.

The bridge, on the south side of the A381, had been out of use for more than 10 years and had reached the end of its operational life.

The deteriorating structure was carefully dismantled overnight last weekend to maintain public safety and avoid the ongoing cost of maintaining a bridge that was no longer used.

Specialist lifting equipment was used to remove the structure safely because of its location above the railway and next to Torquay Road. The work was completed as planned, meaning contingency dates are no longer needed.
