War Memorials Trust

The War Memorials Trust provides grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials in the UK. The funding is for works that follow best conservation practice and can include:

  • urgent and necessary repairs to the fabric of the war memorial
  • repairs to damaged stone
  • selective replacement of severely weathered elements of the war memorial
  • works related to landscaping, such as steps, walls, and railings which form an integral part of the memorial’s design
  • repair or conservation of a garden and planting which is part of a war memorial or a designed landscape which is a memorial in its own right such as a memorial park or playing field (note that maintenance work is not eligible)
  • works to a memorial building which are urgently needed to keep the building in use

Cleaning, reinstatement of features, access and security measures can also be funded.

Priority is given to those memorials in greatest need.

Funding may be considered up to a maximum grant of £5,000 for non-freestanding war memorials, while freestanding, non-beneficiary war memorials may be considered up to a maximum grant of £20,000. Funding is normally awarded at 50% of eligible costs.

The fund is open to anyone to apply; individuals or organisations, including councils. If you are not responsible for the war memorial you must provide written proof that you have the custodian’s consent to carry out the proposed works.
