The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust provides grant funding for work that seeks to make a positive change across the UK as a whole. The trust is open to funding a range of different organisations and approaches, but generally funds work that is about addressing the root causes of problems rather than delivering services or alleviating immediate needs.
The funding priorities include:
Peace and Security
Funding for charitable work in:
- Challenging militarism
- Scrutiny of counter-terrorism measures
- Alternative approaches to defence and security
- Responding to the harms of systemic racism
Power and Accountability
For activities that help to share power more equally by:
- Strengthening corporate accountability
- Strengthening democratic accountability
- Encouraging responsible media
Rights and Justice (previous recipients only)
For long-term work that works towards reforming policy and legislation relating to:
- Protection and promotion of human rights and their enforcement in the UK
- Promoting rights and justice for minorities who face the most severe forms of racism
- Promotion of rights and justice for refugees and other migrants by identifying and tackling structures and systems that may deny them their rights
Sustainable Future
Developing and promoting sustainable, low-carbon alternatives by exploring:
- Better economics
- Beyond consumerism (encouraging more sustainable ways of living)
- New voices (giving marginalised or under-represented groups a voice on economic and environmental issues)
Charities and other not-for-profit organisations working at national level can apply. Individuals can also apply but the project must be for public benefit. Statutory bodies and for-profit organisations are not eligible.
