Small and medium-sized organisations working to address deprivation and disadvantage in their local area can apply for a grant from the Forte Charitable Foundation. Formerly the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation, it has an annual grants budget of around £2.5million for organisations working with the most disadvantaged groups in the UK.
Your organisation will need a strong track record in addressing local issues in the most deprived urban or rural areas:
‘Urban’ is defined as areas with a population of more than 10,000 people. Funding is for areas of extreme urban deprivation and your postcode must be ranked within the most deprived 15% of the Index of Multiple Deprivation*.
‘Rural’ is defined as areas with less than 10,000 inhabitants in your village/town. Your postcode must be within the most deprived 50% of the Index of Multiple Deprivation*. The Foundation is interested in supporting remote, rural, economically-deprived areas where there are few local facilities.
Registered charities, social enterprises that are not structured as CICs, co-operative or community benefit societies and voluntary organisations (with a constitution and bank account) may apply. Local authorities, schools and CICs are not eligible. Forte Charitable Foundation prefers to support frontline organisations working directly with people in need.
There are two levels of grant funding:
Small Grants: between £2,000 and £10,000 for core costs, salaries, running and project costs for one year. Projects must have a focus on community support.
Major Grants: between £10,000 and £100,000 for core costs, salaries, running and project costs for up to three years (£50,000 maximum for a one-year project). Your organisation must have a focus on family support: this includes early intervention, families coping with addiction and prisoners’ families.
You can apply for up to 50% of your costs.
