Lower Hoopern Valley Guided Tour Information
We would like to invite you to visit the Lower Hoopern Valley on a short guided site tour
Tour Times & Booking
Places are limited and advance booking is required
All tours will depart from outside the Forum building entrance, and will be led by a University of Exeter member of staff. Each tour includes a guided walk through the Lower Hoopern Valley and will last approximately 60-75 minutes.
40 places are available on each tour slot (20 places per guide).
Wednesday 2nd September
Slot 1: 12:30pm to 1:30pm
Meet at 12:15pm
Two guided tours will run simultaneously.
Please note: These tours take place during the lunch break. A packed lunch will be available to collect from the catering point in Forum Street and can be taken with you on the tour
Slot 2: 4:00pm to 5:15pm
Meet at 3:55pm
Two guided tours will run simultaneously.
Please note: This is the final session of Day 1 and is an optional session that requires pre-booking
Thursday 3rd September
Slot 1: 1:30pm to 2:30pm
Meet at 1:25pm
Two guided tours will run simultaneously.
Slot 2: 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Meet at 2:30pm
Two guided tours will run simultaneously.
Please note: On Thursday the 3rd September, the guided tours will take place instead of the indoor workshop sessions

About the Lower Hoopern Valley
The Lower Hoopern Valley is a small county wildlife site owned by the University of Exeter, situated south of the Streatham campus. Since 2023, they have been managing the Valley for biodiversity, natural capital, community access and enjoyment and research and teaching. Part of the biodiversity and natural capital enhancements have included the installation of leaky woody dams, woody flow spreaders and gully stuffing in the Taddiforde Brook, and some simple water flow monitors have been installed in collaboration with researchers.
We’d love for you to join us as we talk about how approaches to managing the Valley have changed, and take a look at some of the nature-based flood management interventions. The University will also share details on their campus-wide approach to reducing water run-off.

Please note: The Taddiforde Brook running through the Valley is inaccessible in some areas, so we won’t be able to show you all the interventions featured in this video.
Additional tour notes:
- The Lower Hoopern Valley is a natural site with many narrow, steep paths which can get muddy and slippery in wet weather
- We ask that you wear appropriate footwear – trainers or wellies with good grip to avoid slips and falls
- Depending on the weather, bring sun cream and sun hats, or jumpers and waterproofs
- There are ticks present in the Valley so we would ask you to dress appropriately – long trousers tucked into socks – and check yourself afterwards
- There is very limited seating in the Valley, and we anticipate the tour will take over an hour (including the walk from the Forum)
